Want Netflix streaming on your living room TV? You’ll have to drop $100 or more on an Apple TV, Roku Box, Blu-ray player, video game console, HDTV or Google TV device that supports it — unless you already own aniPhone 4 or fourth-generation iPod touch. In that case, you can just plug the device into your TV and watch from your Netflix app.
Netflix updated its app for iPhone and iPod touch today with minor bug fixes and one killer new feature: TV out. You can use one of the many adapters that connect your handset’s USB port to an external display with component, VGA or composite connections — just remember that only the iPhone 4 and the most recent iPod touch support video out so far.
Netflix originally considered a strategy that would involve building its own set-top-boxes as exclusive providers of Netflix content on your TV, but we believe that would have failed. Now game consoles, Blu-ray players, TVs, mobile phones, portable media players and tablets are supporting the service, giving everyone a plethora of options for getting that content on any screen they want at any time.
Though the prophecy of Netflix in every living room hasn’t been fulfilled yet, it’s getting closer. Using a cellphone as a Netflix-streaming set-top box could save some users money and it’s just plain cool for those who already have other options.
